Who left that dog poo?

This is a proposal for a site to track, report, and find the perps leaving dog poo around the South Loop of Chicago.

I imagine that contributors (who are known and registered), and the public (who are not registered), could report ‘orphan poos’ as posts or as comments, respectively.  Contributors could take advantage of the iPhone WordPress app to report sitings ‘on scene’.

Comments will be moderated, so offensive messages can be headed off before they show up online. Similarly, administrators will be able to revise and/or clean up unfortunate wording in posts.

We will be able to add a map plugin to keep a visual record of the reports.  Follow up observation and/or speculations can be made in the comments.

We will also be able to provide pointers to the location of dog bag dispensers (although this program is still a disaster – perhaps things will improve in the coming year) and appropriate trash receptacles.

Any ideas, add them in the comments!

It’s interesting that you’re devoting a whole blog to dog poop – any city that has off leash parks is going to have a problem with dog poop. I’ve got a dog blog about the city I live in – Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada – and I’ve devoted quite a few blog posts to the subject, because it’s been a bone of contention – especially to users of our multi-use parks that are not dog owners. My theory is that just dog poop is litter just like every type of litter – and just because you can assign a demographic to that litter doesn’t mean you should make that whole demographic suffer – ie ban that whole demographic from services that they pay for with their taxes simply because a segment is non-compliant. I’m not condoning that people don’t pick up – I’m just being realistic. Here in Canada we have a very popular coffee shop – Tim Horton’s – and people throw their Tim Horton’s cups everywhere – and no one would ever suggest banning customers of Tim Horton’s from our public parks – but yet dog owners are constantly under the threat of being banned from public spaces because a small number of owners don’t pick up.

I have a category on my blog for dog poop at http://dogkisser.blogspot.com/search/label/Dog%20Poop – but my favourite posts are at “What’s the difference between litter and poop?” http://dogkisser.blogspot.com/2008/06/whats-difference-between-litter-and.html and “What to do about the poop problem” http://dogkisser.blogspot.com/2008/05/what-to-do-about-poop-problem.html and a comment left about Point Pleasant and poop – http://dogkisser.blogspot.com/2008/06/comment-left-about-point-pleasant-park.html

All dog owners are responsible for the actions of their dogs this includes the biting end and the pooping end. I own a dog care (Home Boarding) business and engage a specialist “poop” man to dispose of any waste in my garden. We also carry poop bags when out on walks. If we want our animals and ourselves to be accepted and loved by the community that we live in we have to scoop the poop.

    Good luck with your efforts.

    Joe Dyer
