Everything we’ve seen and heard from the Alderman’s office suggests that the City can and will do nothing directly about the problem.

There is the possibility that a dog poo bag distribution program could be developed and made much more robust than the short-lived now-defunct effort in the South Loop. (You’ve seen all those empty tube dispensers??). But that will require initiative and, probably, sponsorship of some sort in order to provide dispensers, bags, and ongoing support. It can’t be all-volunteer, and it can’t rely on the spotty support of City central purchasing (which, through nobody’s fault in particular, ended up leaving the program in the lurch).

Other than that, it’s up to us to (slowly) push towards change in the dog owning community.

In reply to notadogperson. We came across an interesting article in ChicagoTalks from several years ago 'Residents complain about dog poop in Lincoln Park'. What caught our eye was the statement:

Despite a city ordinance that prohibits dog littering, canine excrement clutters the sidewalks and parks of Lincoln Park. That’s not surprising, given the number of public trash cans on Lincoln Park’s commercial streets: zero. So where does all that dog poop go? April Terry, a sales associate at Barker & Meowsky Pet Boutique, 1003 W. Armitage Ave., said the fact that there are no public garbage cans on Armitage – which stretches 26 blocks – causes dog owners to discard smelly baggies in store-front plants, at business doorsteps and on the sidewalks. And more often than not, said Terry, owners simply leave the dog poop where the dogs left it.

We don't frequent Lincoln Park or Bucktown, so can't vouch for the situation there - but if it's the case that there's no place to put your bag, what are you going to do? Not a lot of fun to carry that bag for half a mile to get back home... And so the behavior begins.

Anybody know what to do about it? I have posted signs, called the city, and our alley is still disgusting. Can all of you call the city or the alderman – maybe some action with more complaints.

If you ever want a poop picture, just head to 11th and Wabash – a route people often take their dogs to get to Grant Park. One thing that I can’t fathom is why people think that it’s alright to have your dog poop if there’s snow on the ground. Guess what, when the snow melts, the poop doesn’t disappear with it.

I’m so disgusted by all the dog-waste I see daily. In my opinion, if a person is not willing to pick up after their pet, or at least put diaper on their dog, they should not have a pet. My neighbor lets his dog poop in his own backyard, which is a step-up from those who walk their dog so that they can leave surprises near other people’s door steps

In reply to dl. Brussels, Belgium is much, MUCH worse. I have lived in the south loop for two years and was repulsed by the rampant neglect. However, Brussels looks like a wasteland. Absolutely disgusting. Owning a dog is a right that comes with an inconvenient chore. We share this world with our neighbors. Show your neighbor some respect.

As a dog owner, I cannot believe these lazy idiots that don’t pick up after their dogs! One night I was walking my dog, this man let his dog poop and didnt pick up. I offered him a bag to pick up the poop, he took the bag but never picked up the poop. Just kept walking. I really wanted to pick up his dogs poop, follow him home and put his dog’s poop on the door handle to his home!

I must say that Bucktown is by far poo central of Chicago. My new favorite contribution by dog people to the city are the blue and black poop bags left on the sidewalks. These poop bags like to gather in clusters up to counts of ten, usually fifteen to twenty feet from an alley trash can. I’m thinking they are just too heavy or maybe these dog people feel they have done enough work for the day and we should be grateful that they put it in a bag and if non dog people don’t like it they can throw it away.
This by the way is veeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrryyyyy tame for me, otherwise I don’t think it will be posted. There’s lots more I have to share.
